Quick Take
Halifax's pioneer in organic, locally-sourced comfort food continues to impress with hearty dishes and sustainable practices in the heart of downtown.

The Wooden Monkey has been a Halifax institution since 2003, championing organic, locally-sourced ingredients long before it became trendy. After my recent visit on January 15, 2025, I'm pleased to report that this Grafton Street staple continues to deliver on its founding principles while evolving with the times.

Atmosphere & Philosophy
Walking into The Wooden Monkey feels like entering a friend's well-appointed living room. Warm wood tones, local artwork, and the gentle hum of conversation create an inviting atmosphere that's equally suitable for a casual lunch or intimate dinner. The restaurant's commitment to sustainability is evident everywhere – from the reclaimed wood furniture to the detailed sourcing information on their menu.
Menu Highlights
Organic Beef Burger
Their signature organic beef burger ($16) features grass-fed beef from a local farm, served on a house-made bun with organic greens and hand-cut fries. The patty was juicy and flavorful, though I would have appreciated a bit more seasoning. The fries were crispy and satisfying.
Rating: 4/5 – Solid execution of a classic with quality ingredients.
Wild Mushroom Risotto
The wild mushroom risotto ($22) showcased local foraged mushrooms in a creamy, well-executed risotto. The earthy flavors were prominent, and the dish felt both comforting and sophisticated. A perfect choice for vegetarians.
Rating: 4.5/5 – A standout vegetarian dish that doesn't feel like an afterthought.
Fish & Chips
Using sustainably-caught haddock ($19), their fish & chips arrived with a light, crispy batter and perfectly flaky fish inside. Served with mushy peas and tartar sauce, it's a refined take on the Maritime classic.
Rating: 4/5 – Fresh fish with a conscience.
Drinks & Desserts
The drink menu features local craft beers, organic wines, and creative non-alcoholic options. Their house-made ginger beer ($4) was particularly refreshing. For dessert, the organic chocolate cake ($8) was rich and decadent – a perfect end to the meal.
Value & Service
At $$, The Wooden Monkey offers excellent value for the quality and sourcing of their ingredients. Service was friendly and knowledgeable, with our server able to discuss the origins of various ingredients and accommodate dietary restrictions with ease.

The Wooden Monkey remains a Halifax treasure, proving that sustainable dining doesn't have to sacrifice flavor or affordability. While some dishes could use bolder seasoning, the restaurant's commitment to quality ingredients and ethical sourcing makes it a standout choice for conscious diners.
